Brussels – The Belgian government led by conservative Bart De Wever says “yes” to surrogacy, extends the possibility to singles and gay couples, and controversy erupts. Because De Wever, incumbent prime minister in the Kingdom of Belgium and historic leader of the N-VA, a party that sits in the European Conservative (ECR) benches in Europe, is an ally of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whose Fratelli d’Italia party also belongs to the ECR, which, however, has other ideas on the issue. “Giorgia Meloni should go to her ally Bart De Wever for a lesson in law and civility,” stresses Carolina Morace, a 5 Star Movement MEP member of the women’s rights and gender equality committee. “In Belgium,” she further stresses, “a right-wing government, from which I am divided by many things, shows that on the recognition of rights, there should be no political distinctions; in Italy, the right wing fuels witch hunts and state homophobia.

Meloni’s new Italy “friend” prime minister would essentially disavow political and agenda alliances. “A few days ago, Giorgia Meloni on X wrote that they have common values with De Wever,” Morace again ironizes and criticizes.
At the EU level, European institutions have agreed to recognize and prosecute the crime of exploitation of surrogacy, a measure that does not target the institution of surrogacy but rather an abuse of it.
