Brussels – Re-establish the parliamentary committee on the fight against organized crime: The 5 Star Movement proposes to go “back to the old days” to when the EU Parliament had a special body against mafias because, explains the initiator of the initiative, Giuseppe Antoci, “mafias represent an existential threat to the European Union and its member states, and for this reason, a strong, joint, and coordinated response is needed at the European level.”
A special commission on organized crime, corruption and money laundering (Crim Commission) was established in March 2012 during the 7th European Legislature but was not maintained. For Antoci, it is time to return to this decision. The coordinators of the Civil Liberties Committee will discuss the proposal in September. Then, in case of a favourable vote, it will be up to the Conference of Presidents to to decide to establish the new anti-mafia commission.
