Brussels – The PD’s head of delegation to the European Parliament, Brando Benifei, won the best MEP of the legislature award along with Romania’s MEP Dragos Tudorache, for their work as co-negotiators of the world’s first law to regulate Artificial Intelligence, the European AI Act.
“I am honored by this recognition after many years of work on an issue of such great relevance. With this law, Europe tries to map out a clear direction to protect and balance rights, democracy, and innovation, countering discrimination and creating opportunities,” Benifei said. But “as I said in my speech accepting the award,” this recognition is valid for the great work of the entire European Parliament to give strength to the Union in very difficult years. I am thinking above all of the extraordinary commitment to solidarity during the Covid crisis by the late President Sassoli.”
As part of an award ceremony organized by The Parliament Magazine held last night in Brussels in the presence of European Commission Vice-President Suica and Belarusian opposition leader-in-exile Svetlana Tikanovskaya, among others, a posthumous award for Jacques Delors’ work in building the European Union was given, which was collected by Enrico Letta as president of the institute named after the French statesman.
