Brussels – “If we wait any longer to take concrete action to stop Netanyahu’s government, there will be nothing left to save.” This was stated by PD MEPs Cecilia Strada, Annalisa Corrado, Alessandro Zan, Camilla Laureti, Sandro Ruotolo, Brando Benifei, and Marco Tarquinio in a communication calling for an end to European support for Israel.
Emphasizing that the country has been preventing humanitarian aid access to the Gaza Strip for over a month and continues to claim civilian casualties, the group appealed to European institutions calling on them to “intervene immediately with all available means to enforce international law and support the Palestinian civilian population, starting with the immediate suspension of the Cooperation Agreement with Israel and the arms embargo on Israel,” a request shared by the group’s Socialists & Democrats Iratxe Garcia Perez and by the PD secretary Elly Schlein.
The MEPs also attacked the attitude of the Italian government toward the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Netanyahu: “We consider it extremely serious that the plane carrying President Netanyahu” bound for Washington “flew over Italian soil, diverting its route of travel to avoid the airspace of some countries that could have applied the arrest warrant issued by the ICC against him,” the MEPs continued. Concerning the flight, this morning (April 10), the Democratic Party presented a parliamentary question in Rome to ask Giorgia Meloni’s government through what procedures it was authorised.
