Brussels – EU and Egypt can begin their cooperation on research and innovation. The European Commission and the Egyptian government concluded negotiations for the North African country’s association with Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship program for funding research and innovation. The agreement is expected to be signed by November 2025, and its entry into force is subject to final validation by both sides.
The European Commission said “transitional arrangements will apply” starting today (April 10). It will allow Egyptian entities to apply and be treated as “eligible entities” based in a country associated with Horizon Europe for calls implementing the budget from 2025 onward. “Egypt’s association with Horizon Europe will drive progress in key sectors like energy, food security, and digital transition, creating new opportunities for innovation,” said Ekaterina Zaharieva, commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation.
