Brussels – Today in Davos, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen launched the Global Energy Transition Forum together with International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol.
At COP28, the world rallied to triple renewable energy and double energy efficiency by 2030. The deadline is fast approaching, warns a Commission note, which explains that the forum brings together partners from around the world, from Brazil, Canada, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to Kenya, Peru, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and many others, as well as businesses and investors, all of whom share the same goal: maintain the momentum of the clean energy transition, implement flagship projects, and unlock more investment.
No one can be left behind in the global clean energy transition. In her speech, von der Leyen also stressed the need for “a collective effort to increase renewable energy production in Africa.” Despite holding 60 per cent of the world’s best solar resources and aiming to quintuple its renewable energy capacity by 2030, the continent currently receives less than 2 per cent of global clean energy investment.
