Cairo – The “Elmed power line is a 600 MW interconnection project between Tunisia and Italy, which Tunisia’s Steg and Terna will develop. Currently, the project is fully financed with a €300 million grant from the EU, from the Connecting Europe Facility, and the total cost is about €850 million; the rest will be financed equally by Terna and Steg. We are now in a phase where we are working on the tenders, analyzing all the bids received for the cable and the converter stations in Sicily and Tunisia. The idea and the timeline is that most of this project will start in 2025 and be operational in mid-2028,” said Ouael Chouchene, Tunisia’s Secretary of State for Energy Transition, during CSEW, the Cairo Sustainable Energy Week underway in Cairo.
