Brussels – Italy is officially in an excessive deficit procedure. As scheduled, the EU Council decided to initiate the surveillance process for the state of public accounts through a written procedure. In addition to Italy, the procedure is also triggered for Belgium, France, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary. It has been decided not to close the one that opened in 2020 against Romania.
For Italy and the Meloni government, reforms and homework will be needed. In the event of an excessive deficit, the procedure aims to prompt its correction by subjecting member states to stricter scrutiny and recommending effective measures to correct the deficit.
