Brussels – Unemployment held steady in the euro area in May. According to Eurostat surveys, the jobless rate remains at 6.4 per cent. The European statistical office estimates that there were about 13.2 million unemployed within the European Union in the month, including just over 11 million in the eurozone. Compared to April 2024, the unemployed increased by 13 thousand in the EU and 38 thousand in the eurozone.
The situation concerning youth unemployment is similar. Between April and May, the rate of those under 25 without a job remained steady at 14.2 per cent. In absolute terms, there was an increase of three thousand unemployed people in the euro area, offset by an overall decrease of 13 thousand at the EU level.
