Brussels -The entrance to the European Parliament in Brussels was ‘colored’ to draw attention to practices and models against the environment and sustainability. Four very young activists targeted (but failed) the doors of the elected European Union institution with orange paint, leaving handprints on the entrance shutters and beginning to write what was supposed to be the desperate slogan “Help the planet,” not completing the job due to the arrival of law enforcement officers who stopped the paintbrushes before they could finish.
Upon the arrival of police officers, called by the security services of the European Parliament, the activists attempted to passively resist by remaining seated. They were one by one loaded ‘by weight’ into the van and transferred to the police station.
The activists acted almost undisturbed because of the suspended parliamentary business before the European elections. With the entrance closed to the public, even the security guards were effectively absent, which allowed more time and better conditions for their move. The services of the EU institution immediately cleaned the entrance overlooking the Place du Luxembourg.
It is also a blow to the image and reputation of the Parliament: the decision to specifically target the EU institution indicates that there are those among young people who feel that not enough is being done to combat climate change.
