Brussels – The shadow of Russia and suspicion of interference in the European Parliament are shaking the EU capital. Belgium’s federal prosecutor’s office searched the home of a European Parliament official in Schaarbeek, one of the municipalities in the Brussels capital, and at the office of the EU institution. The investigation relates to the ‘Voice of Europe’ affair, a media outlet shut down and sanctioned for spreading Russian propaganda.
According to information released by Belgian investigators, in the broader framework of investigations into members of the European Parliament approached and paid to promote Russian propaganda through the Voice of Europe, “there are indications that the European Parliament employee concerned played a significant role in this.” Searches were also conducted, in parallel, at the European Parliament’s offices in Strasbourg.
