Brussels – European representatives of trade unions and employers’ associations are publishing an unprecedented joint appeal to urge citizens to participate in the European elections next June 6-9.
“At time of geopolitical crisis, it is even more important to support and strengthen European democracy,” begins the appeal, which explains that “this is why the European social partners—ETUC, BusinessEurope, SGI Europe and SMEunited—are calling on those eligible to vote in the upcoming European elections to make their voices heard.”
As representatives of trade unions and employers from across Europe, “we are united in our belief that participation in these elections is not only about electing policymakers,” the associations stress, “It is about ensuring a bright future for all and addressing the key challenges of our time.”
Trade unionists and employers say that “as social partners, we also know how important it is to work together to ensure that Europe remains the home of successful businesses and quality jobs.”
“At a time when the world seems to be increasingly divided, let’s ensure that we peacefully and democratically express our views and collectively shape a bright future that works for everyone, respecting diversity, openness and tolerance.”
The document is signed by Esther Lynch, Secretary General of ETUC; Markus J. Beyrer, Director General of BusinessEurope; Véronique Willems, Secretary General of SMEunited; and Valeria Ronzitti, Secretary General of SGI Europe.
