Brussels – Alexander Winterstein is the new Director for Political Communication and Services at the Commission’s Directorate-General for Communication (DG COMM). This department is responsible for communicating to the media and the public the political priorities of the Commission and EU policies. It is also responsible for the study and analysis of trends in public opinion.
The College of Commissioners made the appointment official without specifying when he would take office, the date of which will be later determined and announced. Winterstein, Austrian, 55, is a longtime European civil servant. He is currently unit head for Communications Policy at the Directorate-General for Competition. He was deputy chief spokesperson for the European Commission between 2015 and 2019 and was previously head of the communications and inter-institutional relations unit in the Directorate-General for Competition. Winterstein also held several positions within the same department, including political assistant to the Director General.
