Brussels – Inflation fell slightly in the eurozone in January. According to preliminary data from Eurostat, the rate reached 2.8 percent, down from the 2.9 percent recorded in December 2023 (-0.1 percent point). Looking at the main components, ‘food, alcohol and tobacco’ is expected to record the highest annual rate in January (5.7 percent, down from 6.1 percent in December), followed by services (4 percent, stable compared to December), non-energy industrial goods (2 percent, compared to 2.5 percent in December) and energy (-6.3 percent, compared to -6.7 percent in December).
At the country level, the Italian figure is expected to increase by 0.4 percentage points (from 0.5 percent to 0.9 percent), while the German and French figures to decrease (from 3.8 percent to 3.1 percent in Germany and from 4.1 percent to 3.4 percent in France)
