Brussels – ‘New and Old Challenges for the Renewing EU. What are the prospects after the June 6-9 elections?’: this is the theme of the event ‘How can we govern Europe?’, organized by Withub with the editorial direction of Eunews, GEA, and the art. 49 Foundation, which will be held this afternoon in Brussels at the residence of the Italian ambassador to Belgium. Leading European and national players will discuss the challenges that the European legislature will have to face from 2024, following the June 6-9 Parliamentary elections and the entry into office of the new Commission. The debate will focus on the new Stability and Growth Pact and on the issues of food and energy security, in the context of the goals of the ecological transition, questioning how to achieve them by exploiting their full potential and limiting their negative impacts.
The event will begin at 2 p.m. with three panels starting with a speech by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. The first, at 3 p.m., will deal with economic and political priorities and the international role of the Union in the incoming new legislature. Speakers include MEPs Brando Benifei, Laura Ferrara, Massimiliano Salini and Raffaele Stancanelli. Italy’s permanent representative to the EU, Vincenzo Celeste, Cese president emeritus Luca Jahier, Confindustria European Affairs director Matteo Borsani, and Ceps research director Cinzia Alcidi will also attend. After that, at 4:30 p.m., there will be a panel discussion entitled ‘Food safety and environmental sustainability: the new EU regulatory framework to ensure quality food while respecting nature’. Speakers will include MEPs Camilla Laureti and Herbert Dorfmann, Director General DG Agri Mihail Dumitru, Copa Cogeca policy coordinator Patrick Pagani, and Filiera Italia CEO Luigi Scordamaglia. The third panel will be dedicated to ‘Energy security: reduced dependence on Russia, is the EU able to aim for autonomy with renewable sources?’. Speakers will include MEPs Patrizia Toia and Tiziana Beghin, Italy’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the EU Stefano Verracchia, Deputy Director General DG Ener Matthew Baldwin, Italian Initiative Group President Alberto Mazzola and Eni Head of European Government Affairs Luca Giansanti. Asvis scientific director Enrico Giovannini will conclude the discussion.
A new European publishing initiative will also be presented during the event. The Undersecretary with responsibility for publishing Alberto Barachini, Withub CEO Andrea Poli, Public Policy director Leopoldo Papi, Agence Europe director Lorenzo Riccardi, Afp Business development Italy director, Sabrina Rossi Montegrandi, and Total EU director Alessio Pisanò will also attend the event.
