The leader of Podemos, the Spanish Pablo Iglesias, will be the candidate for the European Parliament Presidency for GUE United Left. A candidacy intended to “represent the periphery and the south of Europe, for democracy and social rights.” Southern Europe calls for “sovereignty and dignity” and refuses to become “the colony of financial powers that no one elected.”
Iglesias defined the agreement between PES and EPP for the election of Martin Schulz as Parliament President “a scam” and launched a call for support to socialist MEPs from Southern Euorpe: “Otherwise, I want to see how they would justify their support for a majority that goes against citizens’ will,” a majority representing “the Great Coalition in power in Germany and in Greece as well” and that is “imposing its austerity policies.”
According to Iglesias, the problem of nowadays institutions is that “they do not represent people but the members of a caste, a caste that is destroying the same institutions and democracy as well.”
