Brussels – “Standing still would mean breaking down for the Union – this is why the Italian government wants to change European rules in 2017,” said the Undersecretary for European Affairs Sandro Gozi during an interview to Alberto D’Argenio for the Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica.
Gozi would like to hit the target during the Celebrations for the 60th Anniversary of the Union. “If Europe remains trapped in the status quo, with the Eurozone experiencing troubles and Schengen under attack, the risk is getting disintegrated, with the subsequent triumph of populist movements.” The interviewer asked him whether the Government wants to amend the Treaties: “Of course,” said Gozi, who thinks about “a differentiated, two-circle Union, inside a big, continental Europe.”
The Italian government is then working at “a wider circle which would include all States, based on the single market and its four pillars, starting from Schengen.” In addition to this, a sencond, smaller circle, “the core of the Union,” explained Undersecretary Gozi, “composed of a reformed, deeper Eurozone. We need to give a democratic legitimation to Institutions, thus the future European Minister of Treasury should be elected by the European Parliament, and act under its control.”
