At the eve of the European Elections, 340 ‘eurocandidates’ from 27 Member States – just Poland is missing – signed together with over 125,000 citizens the campaign “Restarting the Future” against corruption, organized crime and Mafia, promoted by Libera and Gruppo Abele.
Candidates were asked clear requirements. First, during the campaign, they shall have transparent candidacies: a detailed CV, with all their public and professional offices, in order to evaluate both their competence and their possible conflicts of interest. The commitment shall be kept when elected as MEP. During the first 150 days after the election, in fact, MEPs are asked to undertake three responsibilities. First, to re-form a Parliamentary Intergroup against corruption, organized crime and money laundering. Then, promoting a Parliamentary Resolution for creating a European directive on whistleblowing protecting those throughout the Community territory who ‘whistle’ to report wrongdoing. Third, to be the promoter of a Parliamentary decision establishing the 21st March as the European day of remembrance and commitment to the memory of the innocent victims of organized crime, on every 21 March.
So far, 117 Italian candidates signed the call. L’Altra Europa con Tsipras leads the ranking with 26 candidates, then PD and M5S with 19 candidates. Last of the list, Forza Italia, Lega Nord and Fratelli d’Italia with only 3 candidates each.
