About a hundred of protestors attacked the police at Place Schuman, just below the buildings of the European Commission and Council in Brussels. It happened at the end of the rally organized by European Workers’ Unions to protest against austerity measures and to ask European institutions a boost for growth and job creation. Over forty-thousand persons coming from all over Europe (especially from Belgium, France and Germany) attended the rally, according to the organizers. The protest was completely peaceful, but at the end of the dedicated path about a hundred persons – most of them working for the Antwerp society for urban cleaning, who have been fighting for a long time for their rights – moved towards the policemen barrier protecting the European institutions and started throwing stones, paper and smoke bombs. The riot squad resisted the assaults (which lasted for more than half an hour), breaking the crowd up with hydrants.
