MEPs approved an update to EU laws in which they said a common charger for all mobile phones should be developed. Rapporteur Weiler (S&D): “It will put an end to charger clutter and 51,000 tonnes of electronic waste annually”
A draft law for a common charger was approved by MEPs by 550 votes to 12, with 8 abstentions, aiming to reduce waste, costs and hassle for users. The update lays down harmonised rules for radio equipment, including cellular telephones, car-door openers and modems.
The Parliament called for a renewed effort to develop a common charger for mobile phones, which would simplify users’ lives. “I am especially pleased that we agreed on the introduction of a common charger, said Barbar Weiler (S&D), “It will put an end to charger clutter and 51,000 tonnes of electronic waste annually.”
Even though an agreement on the draft law has already been found, it will still have to be formally approved by the Council. After that, Member States will have two years to implement the rules into their national laws, while manufacturers will have an additional year to comply.
