The President of the European Council defends the integration process and invites Member States to promote European values during the electoral campaign
The European Union cannot be destroyed. No way back. Yet, it is possible to reopen the dialogue on its integration process, said President Van Rompuy in a speech in Ljubljana. During an official visit to the Member State, the President of the European Coucil dedicates the last part of his speech to anyone in Europe would like to have less Europe and more National States. To anyone willing to loosen the integration process. “We just cannot imagine any longer a return to the past with national customs borders and national currencies,” said Van Rompuy during his remarks following his meeting with Prime Minister of Slovenia Alenka Bratušek. “The European Union brought peace, prosperity and democracy,” and looking forward it will not cease to have positive outcomes. “2014 is going to be an important year, not least because of the European elections in May,” he added. Member State will hence have to contain anti-Europeists and eurosceptics. “Political and opinion leaders have to stand up for our European convictions, for our policies and tell where the long-term interests of our citizens lie as they prepare to vote.”
