“Europe’s real crossroad is to choose whether to go towards political union or remain midstream”
The European Union must change because as it is currently, it is not capable of meeting present and especially future challenges. This is Emma Bonino’s mindset, who for days now has been emphasizing the need for a change of course. “Europe is at a crossroads,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs bluntly, adding that “the true crossroads of Europe is to choose whether to go towards a political union or remain in midstream.” “It’s useless to assign tasks if we do not define democratic accountability.” It is therefore necessary to rethink the EU. “As it stands the current governance is not adequate for the challenges of our times. We must adapt the governance to 28 at the rate of our times and to a fast-paced world.” This concept was expressed last night in Rome for the presentation of the International Energy Agency’s World Energy Outlook. But Bonino expressed the same concept last week in Bologna at the conference “2014 – A decisive year for the European federation.” Already then the Foreign Minister had said that “if this Europe is incapable of dealing with the political and economic challenges of today, it means that the European project needs to be embraced and reorganized, especially by the youth.”
