The International Journalism Festival in Perugia is the most important media event in Europe. At the 2013 Festival we offered the public 210 events in 5 days: conferences, training workshops and debates, 479 speakers from around the world and more than 50,000 participants. Everything made possible by volunteers, 252 men and women, who came to Italy from every part of the world to donate their enthusiasm and professionalism to this event.
IJF is a unique event: we have always hosted the most distinguished voices in the world of journalism and we do it for free. Directors of Italian and international daily newspapers, accredited columnists and professionals from the information discipline publicly debate during the event, they dialogue with other journalists and with the public in the streets and squares of Perugia. Every year we host the most complete School of Data Journalism in Europe in collaboration with the European Center of Journalism and the Open Knowledge Foundation.
The International Journalism Festival takes on crowdfunding. An event that hosts hundreds of volunteers from around the world every year, ready to give their precious contribution, and from speakers of national and international caliber, who annually take part in an event so openly and participatory, welcome the contest. These same contents of the Festival are the results of participation by industry experts and plain old enthusiasts who contribute to the program every year.
And maybe because of this it was natural for participants and big companies – Italian and foreign – to propose the idea of crowdfunding to keep the program going: an awe-inspiring wave of proposals that deserved to be heard and that led us to accept the challenge of fundraising.
