Epifani signed the letter that supports the shared candidacy for all European leftists
The Democratic Party supports Martin Schulz as a candidate for President of the next European Commission. Guglielmo Epifani, Secretary of the party made it official today, sending a letter of support for the presentation of candidacy for the German to succeed Josè Manuel Barroso next November after the European elections, “representing the democratic, socialist, social democratic, labourist and European leftist forces.”
Giacomo Filibeck, Head of Foreign Affairs for the party, and Andrea Manciulli, Head of Europe and Defense, highlight in a note “how Enrico Letta, President of the Council, said yesterday, it is not enough just to dream of a United States of Europe but fundamental to commit so that the European project rediscovers its original mission aimed at development, prosperity, human rights and peace. It is precisely in line with what was illustrated yesterday at the Chamber by Letta that the Democratic Party accepted the European Socialist Party’s invitation to participate in the selection of the joint candidate of leftists for the Presidency of the European Commission.”
Schulz is the “natural” candidate for European Social Democrats, being President of the European Parliament, where essentially all the political forces have voted for a resolution they ask the governments to respect in the appointment of the next Commission President, the indications that will come from voters from Parliament, from which the parties will also propose a candidate for President of the Commission. Schulz’ name was given several times by observers of the comparison between the Union Parties (Cdu-Csu) and Social Democratic Party SDp in Germany, since the Social Democrats would propose the support of Angela Merkel and Schulz for the next year as a condition for their agreement.
“So today a journey begins that will lead the democrats and the Italian democrats to participate in the first real European electoral campaign since when in 1979 the European Parliament was elected by universal suffrage– sustain Filibeck and Manciulli. Having a Presidential candidate of European leftists who is a spokesperson for a common political program that aims to change European policy, oriented toward growth, solidarity, integration and social justice is an unprecedented innovation that will encourage a real debate on the fate of the EU in the European public arena
