The Mep from Catania is the new leader of the party in the European Parliament. Baldassarre “Vicar,” Fidanza Deputy
The job has been vacant since January 10th when Mauro left to join Monti because of polemics with the Cavaliere
Giovanni La Via is the new Pdl head of delegation in the European Parliament. The decision was taken tuesday in Strasbourg by the Parliamentary group. “I will continue our commitment in the burrows of the European People’s Party (PPE) to the development of the European project, in line with that which until today was maintained by the Delegation,” declared La Vie. The position has been vacant since January 10th when Mario Mauro left the Cavaliere’s party to present himself as a candidate with President Mario Monti in the national elections. Ever since, also due to internal movements in the Pdl, owed to the election campaign and various members defecting from the party, he had not been able to come up with a new name.
Last Friday in Rome there was a meeting between Silvio Berlusconi, Angelino Alfano, Secretary of the Pdl Party and Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the Ppe and of the European Commission together with the delegation of the Pdl Members of the EuropeanParliament to resolve the situation and finally give the go ahead to the “after Mauro”. It was decided to wager on the Mep from Catania, an esteemed and respected man on a European level for having handled complicated dossiers like the 2013 Budget and the Common Agriculture Policy reform, which is still in discussion. Supporting him in his task will be Raffaele Baldassarre, nominated “vicar,” a role that didn’t exist with Mauro, while the Deputy will be Carlo Fidanza, who will take Sergio Paolo Silvestris’ place. Initially Erminia Mazzoni also nominated herself as a candidate but then the party came to an agreement so the appointment was made without the need to vote.
